Hmmm....been experimenting with different brushes and the result is a slightly different look and feel to this page. Not sure I like it but let me know what you think.

I agree. The original style is great, but this is a nice, subtle change of pace. Maybe you could consider working this smooth, shaded style for real world storylines and the original style for Sunderland arcs (or vice verse), to give a little different feel to each world.
Of course, I don't know how hard that would be for you to pull off.
