Elf in Ruins - a Work in Progress

So I thought I'd post a work in progress diary type thing of an elf standing amidst ruins.You can see the final piece here

 This is the initial sketh with some colour chucked onto it. Pretty rough at this stage.

I'll try and post new images as I work this up to the finished product. Throw your ideas at me and I'll see if I can weave them in.

Worth noting though that for every picture I start I only decide to finish a tenth of them. I need to feel excited from beginning to end of a personal project otherwiese there's no incentiove for me to finish it. Got a good feeling about this one ...

Update 2

Decided I  didn't like all the masonry so pushed it back a bit. Also changed the canvas shape to make the elf more dominant.

Started to tidy up and work up the colour. As I do that I'm gradually losing the rough line art....

Update 3

So I decided there wasn't enough atmosphere going on. I decided I wanted a ruined setting but also something darker (well this site is called Doomritual afterall). So out with the blue sky and in with some reds, mist and a marshy swampy place.

I also thought our warrior was a little too plain. She needed more equipment and a more substantial costume so we add a headress shoulder armour and other bits and pieces. These will probably change again before the end.

You'll also notice the canvas has been cropped. to make the figure more dominant in the composition.

Up until now the work has been about getting the composition right, getting the general mood right. I'm now feeling much happier about the whole thing so it time to drill down and start addressing the details...

Update 4

Well, all the elements seem to be there so now it's just a matter of polish. to reach the final piece I keep messing about with the costume. I dunno. I quite like this one for simplicity.
